In less time than it takes us to get across town from our home in Atlanta we were driving up the tree-lined entrance of Foxhall Resort, an idyllic 1100-acre resort in Douglasville, Georgia. Although it was a short one-night getaway, we packed in a lot of relaxation, a delicious meal and miles of hiking through rolling countryside and along the Chattahoochee River.
It’s amazing to me what just one night can do to refresh your soul. And if time is limited, who wants to spend a lot of it in the car getting to your destination?
Villas with a View at Foxhall Resort
We stayed in a lakefront villa with a balcony overlooking the lake, one of my favorite features. We made good use of that by enjoying an evening beverage and watching the sun go down.
The room included a sitting area and a kitchenette with a fridge, coffee maker and microwave. The bed was magically comfortable and I loved being able to lie in bed and see the lake and trees beyond.
Our villa also had a bedroom upstairs, making these perfect for two couples or if you’re taking the kids along. While there is only a shower downstairs there is a tub upstairs if you’re a bath kind of person, which I often am.
As Active As You Want To Be
There’s an extensive list of things to do at Foxhall, more than 40 in fact. You can kayak, canoe, fish or paddle board on one of the many lakes, play tennis or pickleball, hunt on the extensive grounds and at the Quail Hunting Preserve, go horseback riding or exploring on a guided ATV trip.
Wield that mallet while playing croquet on the Foxhall Resort Sports Lawn, or play bocce ball, horshoes or volleyball.
If you’re into sporting clays try the 5-stand, covered 5-stand and wobble trap. Foxhall also has the first Beretta Trident Course, a 15-station sporting clays course. Equipment for fishing, racket sports, disc golf and sporting clays is available to rent.
While we enjoy many of those activities, for this short trip we opted to spend hours hiking over the sprawling property. Sometimes we followed one of the many trails but we often just wandered as we pleased, through fields and woods and by the river. The many hiking trails were reason enough to return to Foxhall Resort.
Foxhall is a popular place in parties and events and we passed by several of the event venues all of which had beautiful views.
While we had intended to take kayaks out on the lake, we visited in November and with an early sunset, opted to relax on our balcony instead. While we’ve been known to pack in tons of activities on a trip, this time we were in low-key mode.
When you’re ready to relax in the evenings you can enjoy one of the two fire pits we saw, one by the pool and another on the sports lawn.
Dining at Foxhall
The main clubhouse is a cheery place with rocking chairs lining the front porch, which runs the length of the clubhouse. This is where you’ll find the dining options, within easy walking distance of the accommodations.
You can grab breakfast, lunch and to-go items in the large and airy Flying Fox Market, which also sells some clothing. Catch the game or enjoy a cocktail at Foxhall Bar, the social hub of the resort.
We had dinner at Pheasant Blue, the farm-to-table restaurant where we opted to dine outside on the patio overlooking the pool as it was the quieter location. The menu is short, just the way I like it as I can be overwhelmed with two many choices – two appetizers, two salads and four entrees.
For appetizers we chose oysters with garlic butter and toast and the fried Brussels sprouts with prosciutto. My husband, the oyster lover who delights in knowing he never has to share those, devoured the oysters while I contemplated a plan of attack on the massive serving of Brussels sprouts that threatened to overwhelm the plate.
Entree choices included a hamburger, braised short ribs, hangar steak and a dish with shrimp and peppers served with a goat cheese polenta cake. We chose the shrimp and short ribs and were happy with our choices.
On Sunday morning after we packed up we stayed around to take another long hike before hitting the road. Foxhall Resort is close to Sweetwater Creek State Park so if time allows, take the scenic route and get in another beautiful hike on your way home.
