When I think of a romantic, relaxing getaway, I think of a cozy log cabin with a roaring fire. One year my husband and I spent a full week in a cabin only venturing out for food and to hike. Buffalo Lodging Company is a family-owned business that started in 2009. It has 11 Hocking Hills cabins for 2, many with two bedrooms. They would be perfect if you’re traveling with a friend or family member and each want your own space.

If you find yourself looking for a bigger cabin for another trip, this company has lodges up to seven bedrooms.

Basswood Grove has a private driveway and is only five miles from Old Man’s Cave and downtown Logan, Ohio. It has a hot tub, charcoal grill and kitchen.

Cabins By the Caves, started in 2006, specializes in luxury cabin rentals. It has almost 40 cabins to rent, of which 14 are for 2-4 people.

For something really special, check out The Barn at Pumpkin Ridge. Located on 90 acres that have been designated as a nature preserve, it has three miles of private hiking trails. It has two bedrooms. 2.5 bathrooms, kitchen, outdoor firepit, two indoor wood-burning fireplaces, charcoal grill and hot tub with gazebo. Rates for The Barn start at about $209.

Cabins By the Caves has spa services and grocery delivery to your cabin available. Are you celebrating a special occasion? It has a baker on staff and can bake a custom cake and deliver it to you cabin with 48 hours’ notice.

You’ll also find three locations for charging your electric vehicle.

The Chalets – Couples Paradise Cabin

The Couples Paradise cabin has a full kitchen, gas log fireplace, porch swing, hot tub and central air.

The Chalets, started in 1988 with 16 A-frame cabins and a lodge, now rents out more than 50 cabins. Accommodations range from A-frames to lodge rentals that sleep up to 20 people.

I’ve never stayed in an A-frame, but they are really cute. There’s one called Romantic Escape that includes air conditioning, wood burning fireplace, kitchenette, microwave, fireplace, woodland view and private hot tub.

Cherry Ridge Retreat – The Observatory

The Observatory is on a hill with beautiful views of scenic Hocking Hills and gets its name from the amazing stargazing. The best part? It has its own hot tub, cold plunge water feature and seasonal in-ground swimming pool. It also has full kitchen, gas fireplace and fire pit. And it features its own Celestron Astromaster EQ Telescope.

Cherry Ridge Retreat specializes in Hocking Hills luxury cabins with four romantic cabins that are situated to be private and have an amazing view. I just took virtual tours of each of the four and they are stunning.

Ravine’s Edge. This cabin is surrounded on three sides by forested ravines and has a large family room with panoramic views. The bathroom has an all-glass shower for two with dual shower heads, gas log fireplace, full kitchen, private gazebo and hot tub.

Oak Ridge has two massage chairs, full kitchen and gazebo with hot tub.

Boat House. This may be my 1st choice cabin as it has a dock on a 2.5-acre private lake with a fishing boat! I’m not into fishing but I do love the water. It also has a galley-style kitchen, wood burning fireplace and private hot tub.

Another special feature is the lakeside sauna. How fun would it be to relax a while in the sauna then jump in the lake to cool off?

With any of the cabins, you have access to 140 forested acres, woodland trails and catch and release fishing. You can also arrange for a massage in your cabin.

Rates start at around $315. Celebrating a really special occasion? Go for the Essentials Plus package that includes wifi, firewood, champagne and a couples massage.

Getaway Cabins – The Bliss Cabin

Choose from 40 cedar and log cabin rentals, including 29 cabins for 2 that include hot tubs and are pet friendly. The site has a great search feature so you can find exactly the amenities you are looking for: pets, electric fireplace, gas fireplace, hot tub, wifi, pond and fishing.

All cabins have a refrigerator, microwave, toaster, hair dryers, DVD player, gas grill and air conditioning. They supply dish soap, hand soap, salt, pepper, sugar, creamer and filters.

For a special treat, book a massage with a therapist at Ash Cave Day Spa who will come to your cabin for the treatment.

Inn and Spa at Cedar Falls – Tree House Cabin

Located in Logan, Ohio, the property at Inn and Spa at Cedar Falls is gorgeous, surrounded on three sides by Hocking Hills state parks. Accommodations include five cabins. The Tree House Cabin with a romantic location overlooking a ravine.

It has a covered front porch, gas log fireplace, 2-person whirlpool tub, fully equipped kitchen and king-sized bed.

I was lucky enough to stay in a cottage here and fell in love with it the second I opened my front door. It was small but had everything I needed for a short stay. The food at the on-site restaurant Kindred Spirits was phenomenal and I highly recommend a stay here, whether you book a luxury cottage, cabin or yurt.

One big plus of staying here is that a complimentary breakfast at Kindred Spirit is included in your stay, a special experience. The restaurant is housed in an 1840s log cabin and a delicious hot breakfast is cooked to order. Menu items include house-made granola, fresh fruit, smoothie bowls, omelets and pancakes.

Even if you don’t stay here, be sure to eat at Kindred Spirit as it’s the best restaurant and perfect for a romantic dinner for two.

Another benefit of staying here is that it has an on-site spa offering a variety of treatments. I had a massage with a view of the trees – heavenly.

Consider These Things When Searching Hocking Hills Cabins for 2

You want to make the most of your vacation so think about what amenities you really want. Or maybe don’t want – perhaps you want to disconnect and would not have a TV or Wi-Fi.

Here are some questions to ask yourself.

• Do you need a fully equipped kitchen?

Are you planning on eating most meals in? When I travel I generally want to eat breakfast in our accommodations as I enjoy a leisurely start to the day. I also must have coffee immediately upon waking! Think about whether you need a fully equipped kitchen or a kitchenette.

Some companies offer grocery delivery to your cabin for a small fee. You’ll be stocked for your stay without having to spend precious time grocery shopping. Just open your fridge and you’ll find your milk, eggs and even that chocolate mint ice cream waiting for you.

• Would you like a pool or hot tub?

How I love lounging in a hot tub with an adult beverage any time of year. It’s especially wonderful when it’s chilly outside. Many of the cabins in Hocking Hills have private hot tubs.

Some of the rental companies have properties with pools for the entire community. At least one of the cabins listed below has a seasonal private pool.

• Is the cabin pet-friendly?

Is your four-legged companion joining you on the trip? No worries ­­– there are plenty of pet-friendly cabins to rent with an additional fee for bringing your pet.

• Is it fully accessible for people who have trouble walking or use a wheelchair?

Many of the companies offer cabins that are fully accessible. Some offer a way to find these on the websites and for others you may need to call to inquire.

• Does it offer privacy?

Do you mind being in a row with other cabins or do you prefer being off by yourself without another cabin in site? We once booked a cabin in a state park that had a view of the parking lot and was practically on top of other cabins – hardly the romantic getaway we had planned.

In this case, an unfortunate mishap was a blessing. I showered the first morning and the cabin flooded due to a backed up drain. The staff came to clean it up and offered to move us or give us a refund. We grabbed the refund and fled!

If you can’t tell from the photos and description whether the cabin is secluded, call the owners and ask.

• Does it have a fireplace?

Having a fireplace tops my list when I’m looking for cabin rentals. Gas fireplaces will do but there’s nothing like a wood-burning fireplace. You’ll find several of both in these listings.

One of the saddest days of my husband’s life was when we moved into our current home and had to give up our wood-burning fireplace for a gas one. He is still in mourning and it’s been almost six years.

• Is there wifi available?

Maybe you need a full escape and hope there is no wifi. If you’ve been to the Hocking Hills region then you know cell reception can be spotty. If you rent a cabin with no wifi you’re pretty much cut off. Which may be exactly what you’re looking for.

My husband and I both start the day by reading newspapers on our iPads, so we really want to have wifi available. We stayed in the cutest barrel cabins in a state park in Georgia one time that had no wifi.

We discovered that if we crossed the street and walked halfway up the hill towards the main lodge we could get some coverage. So each morning, we looked like crazy people walking up the hill, standing there long enough to download our newspapers then walking back.
