We were jolted awake at 5:00AM by an ear-piercing fire alarm at our New York City hotel. We jumped out of bed and preparing to evacuate, started throwing on layers to combat the 4-degree cold.
Then an announcement told us to stay put and await further instructions. We heard that six more times before being told the cause for the alarm had been resolved.
I realized later I didn’t know where the stairs were in this maze-like hotel. I looked at the sign on our door and noted to always know the location of the stairs.
