It wasn’t as big of an aha moment as my discovery of the app Tripit, which organized all my travel. But learning how to pack a hat was up there. No more wearing a big straw hat in the airport and trying to find space for it on the plane or crushing it in my suitcase to carry on.
And it’s so simple. Turn the hat upside down in your suitcase and pack around it. I took a large hat to St. Barth and tucked it into my suitcase that way, then put a few things inside the crown. Amazing.

Oh good grief – this solution is so simple and so freakin’ brilliant! My “packable” straw hat has been folded flat so often that it no longer properly opens back up to a natural drape. I’ll try packing around it next time!
I know – I feel kind of dumb I never thought of doing it before. So easy!
