Monthly Morsel: Garnache in Belize

garnache from Carmen's Takeout in Placencia Village

Welcome to Monthly Morsel, our new column that will feature a food item from around the world every month.

During my trip to Belize, I had the pleasure of tasting one of the most popular Belizean street foods, the garnache, also popular in Mexico. In Belize, the garnache is made with a flat, fried tortilla that is then topped with refried beans, chopped cabbage, tomato (or pickled onion) and grated Dutch cheese.

I devoured these delicious garnaches at Carmen’s Takeout during a Taste Belize Food Tour in Placencia Village. Similar to a small tostada, you can easily make these at home.
