A Cut Above: Pearl Fryar’s Topiary Garden

by Jan Schroder
Pearl Fryar's Topiary Garden

He just wanted to win Yard of the Month. Pearl Fryer got a lot more recognition than that for the 3-acre topiary garden he created in Bishopville, South Carolina.

In the 1980s, with no gardening experience and using plants left for compost at a nursery, Pearl clipped and cut his yard into Pearl Fryar’s Topiary Garden and has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning and in National Geographic.

Pearl’s wife, Metra, showed us the hundreds of plants surrounding their modest house on a quiet street and I marveled at what one man and a pair of clippers can do.
