Victoria cruise stop: The Butchart Gardens, fish and chips on Fisherman’s Wharf

by Jan Schroder
Butchart Gardens in the summer.

We planned to Uber to The Butchart Gardens, but hired a guide with Regent Limousine we found in the parking lot who took us there, waited, then gave us a driving tour of Victoria. He dropped us off for a delicious fish and chips lunch on Fisherman’s Wharf. I highly recommend this stress-free method.

The 55-acre Butchart Gardens are spectacular. The site of a former limestone quarry, the wife of the owner, Jennie Butchart, willed it into magnificent bloom in the early 1900s. Her great-granddaughter, Robin-Lee Clarke, now owns the gardens, which welcome close to a million visitors a year.

We visited the gardens in late September and found so many plants still blooming.

The home where Robert and Jenny Butchart lived now houses The Dining Room where a traditional tea is served seasonally.

Don’t you love the colors on this house on Fisherman’s Wharf? When we were there, it was on the market for $835,000 Canadian, roughly $608,000 in U.S. dollars.

It was chilly sitting on the dock but worth it to devour these delicious fish and chips from Barb’s Fish and Chips, in business since 1984. There are only a few communal tables but everyone was friendly and we ended up chatting with a man from England 0n an extended tour of Canada. He said the dish was delicious, and as a Brit, he should know. After we ate, it was short walk back to our cruise ship.
