In third grade our music teacher, Mrs. Puett, would instruct the class to sing a song. “Jan, you just listen.”
My lack of musical ability did not dampen my love of music of just about any genre. Recently I’ve visited three cities in the Southeast where some of the most enduring music has been recorded – Nashville, Memphis and Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
I got chills standing in the same studios where artists like Elvis, Percy Sledge, Aretha Franklin, the Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis recorded. I thought about what Leo Tolstoy said. “Music is the shorthand of emotion.”
