In the Valley of the Canal in Ohio

The Ohio and Erie Canal once ran between Portsmouth and Cleveland, providing Ohio farmers access to East Coast markets. Decades ago, the National Park Service preserved the landscape around the canal that built Ohio.

If you visit Cuyahoga Valley National Park, bring your bike. The 87-mile Towpath Trail follows the canal’s historic route. Among the trail’s sightseeing opportunities is Brandywine Falls, one of several pristine waterfalls in the park.

For nearby shopping and dining, visit historic Hudson, Ohio, home of Western Reserve Academy – the oldest preparatory boarding school outside the Northeast. The town was also an Underground Railroad stop.
